Baguettes are for the ambitious. You’re sure you can power through it. Then you wake up one morning to polish it off with some butter and jam or…maybe some goat cheese and honey or…wait, dammit…it’s hard and tough and, ugh, has gone totally stale.
Normally you’d toss the thing (crying quietly into your Cheerios), but guess what? Reviving stale bread is extremely easy, even if it seems a bit strange.
Step 1: Turn on your faucet (hot or cold, doesn’t matter) and shove the loaf under. Let it get good and soaking wet. Focus on the exterior mostly, but if the interior gets wet, it’ll be OK.
Step 2: Crank up your oven to 300 or 325 degrees and stick your wet loaf in (directly on the rack) for about seven minutes. (If the bread is really soaked inside and out, leave it in for more like ten minutes.)
Step 3: Watch as the water turns to steam and--ta-da!--rehydrates the bread. You've got a good-as-new loaf of bread that's soft on the inside and crisp on the outside.
Step 4: Pass the butter.
