What we eat and drink often shows on our skin. A few late nights, and a few too many naughty meals, and our skin starts showing signs of exhaustion and premature aging. But, you can fight off unnecessary wrinkles and lines by treating yourself to food that will support your skin with the right nutrients and make it smoother. If you want to improve the condition of your skin, consider enjoying some of the following superfoods.
The Best Foods Against Wrinkles
Avocado
Avocado is a true superfood and a real treat for your skin. It’s rich in essential fatty acids that will nourish and moisturize your skin (avocado oil is also one of the best fruit oils for healthy skin). It contains vitamin E and B-complex vitamins that the skin needs for smoothness and elasticity. It’s also rich in vitamin C, a normal skin constituent that builds the dermis and epidermis. But that’s not all – this creamy fruit is also known for rarely containing any pesticides or chemicals and can be consumed without any reservations. if you need more reasons to eat avocado, read my post about the 11 healthy reasons to eat avocado. Avocado is also one of the superfoods mentioned in my e-book about superfoods which is part of the Natural Health Revolution Program. This program will help you to achieve your health, nutrition and weight loss goals.
Berries
Berries are full of antioxidants that kill free radicals and prevent skin damage. They promote cell regeneration and contribute to a soft and silky new skin. If you are concerned about environmental pollutants and you fear you’ve been exposed to some toxins, add more berries to your diet. For more information on how to transform your health with berries, refer to my e-Book The Healing Berry Guide.
Blueberries and raspberries are particularly cherished for their health effects. Wild blueberries are a powerhouse of vitamins and antioxidants. They contain an abundance of anthocyanins that both scavenge free radicals and enhance the effects of vitamin C. They are also a good source of vitamin E and offer your skin an all-round care.
Salmon
Fatty fish are a great source of the much needed omega-3 fatty acids, and salmon might be your best bet to fulfill the body’s nutritional needs and preserve your skin’s smoothness and freshness. Omega-3 fatty acids moisturize the skin and protect it from UV damage that is often associated with premature wrinkling. Omega-3 fatty acids have other amazing health benefits and a recent research found that omega-3 can be useful for breast cancer prevention.
Wild salmon is an additionally good choice, as long as you don’t consume fish that has been exposed to toxins (mercury, pesticides). The salmon’s magnificent pink color is a result of a powerful antioxidant astaxanthin. This carotenoid does a great job destroying free radicals created when your skin is overly exposed to ultraviolet rays. A portion of an Alaskan sockeye wild salmon twice a week will not only smoothen your wrinkles, but also preserve your overall health.
Honey
Honey is often used in good quality face masks (like in these DIY honey face masks). Honey has a hygroscopic nature, which means when exposed to air, it naturally absorbs moisture in from the air, and thus helps keep the skin hydrated, fresh and prevents drying. It’s a completely different type of sugar that doesn’t act in an inflammatory way, but it protects you and kills harmful bacteria. Raw, unprocessed honey is rich in antioxidants and should be used in moderation as a natural sweetener that will make your skin glow. Satisfy your sweet tooth in style!
Natural Yoghurt / Kefir
Natural yoghurt will provide you with all the benefits of probiotics. Its friendly bacteria will protect and nourish the skin both on the inside and outside. You need to find an unprocessed product that will work its magic on your guts and reduce any inflammation or redness. When your digestive tract is vital and healthy, you are less likely to develop any skin conditions and the immune system can work at its best.
You can also replace yoghurt for a portion of kefir – fermented milk drink. This is another great probiotic food that has been used for centuries and contains up to three times more probiotics than the ordinary yoghurt. If the fermented taste suits you, go for it!
Nuts
Replace unhealthy snacks for a handful of almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, pistachios or hazelnuts and enjoy the broad spectrum of goodness they provide you with.
Almonds are rich in vitamin E and help to fight acne, psoriasis and eczema. Brazil nuts, too, are bursting in vitamin E and also contain selenium, so are great for fighting wrinkles. Walnuts are the best source of omega-3 fatty acids and will nourish and soften your skin.
Consume nuts in moderation as they are an oily treat and can quickly bring your calorie count up. Eating nuts is also one of the 70 habits featured in my e-book 70 Powerful Habits For A Great Health which will guide you how to take positive steps to improve your wellness and overall health.
Green tea
Next time you don’t know what beverage to go for, opt for a cup of refreshing green tea. It contains lots of catechins, which are powerful antioxidants that can deal with free radicals and protect your skin from damage and it has 8 amazing health benefits.
For best results and highest levels of catechins in your cuppa, go for loose tea. Tea in bags might seem like a more convenient choice, but it doesn’t come with all the goodness. For a super-dose of catechins, try matcha tea – the finest powdered green tea in the world.
And, if you want to further boost your antioxidant intake, add some lime and make your morning tea an uplifting and rejuvenating beverage. It’s also great cold in the summer months.
You can get green tea at you local supermarket, natural health store and online, but always try to purchase an organic green tea like this one for example.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes can do a lot of good for your circulation and you should start seeing some positive effects on your skin already after eating them regularly for 6 weeks. They are rich in vitamin C that aids collagen production and makes your skin firmer and more viscose. On top of that, they contain lycopene – a chemical that protects your skin from UV damage and can also protect you from various other diseases. Tomatoes are also praised for their anti-cancer abilities. The redder, the better.
Buckwheat
Keep your skin firm and elastic by eating some delicious buckwheat dishes. Buckwheat is a good source of protein and contains all eight essential amino acids, which enable skin repair. It’s also a good source of rutin – a substance that helps you utilize vitamin C and keep collagen levels high. Use it for porridge or bake some healthy delicious goods with buckwheat flour.
Carrots
Carrots are well known for their ability to help protect vision, but it’s now been established that they are also a great anti-wrinkle vegetable. They contain vitamin C and lots of beta-carotene, which protects the skin against damage caused by the sun. Just be aware that carrots are amongst the most polluted vegetables as a lot of pesticides and chemicals are used to grow them. Whenever possible, choose organic produce. Carrots are also one of the ingredient of my DIY healing cream for wounds and minor burns
