Amazing: 10 Uses for Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil is very versatile and is one of the recommended essential oils to have in your home. This essential oil is readily available and inexpensive, and it has uplifting and revitalizing scent to the body and mind.

Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the rinds of lemons and has many easy and practical uses. Here I’m going to cover just some of them which are beneficial for your home and health.

1. Minor skin infections
Lemon essential oil has antiseptic properties and acts as an astringent that can be used for minor skin infections including acne. It is often used in a compress or as a cleanser to disinfect the skin infection. Dilute lemon and lavender essential oils (or tea tree essential oil) in a bowl of water and use a facecloth absorbed with the mixture and hold on the skin infection for up to 10 minutes.

2. Toner for oily skin
Lemon essential oil is a natural toner that helps to balance oil glands and minimize oil production. Mix a few drops of lemon essential oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil, such as jojoba or sweet almond oil, and apply with cotton wool.

3. Reduces cellulite
Blending lemon essential oil with other essential oils such as rosemary and juniper in a carrier oil can help reduce cellulite. The essential oil massage stimulates the lymphatic system and aids your body to eliminate toxins and fight cellulite. Add 20-30 drops of the above essential oils to ½ cup carrier oil and massage the affected areas for 10 to 15 minutes a day. For a better effect you could regularly use a deep tissue foam roller.

4. Treats cold sores
Lemon essential oil also has anti-viral properties, so it can be used in a lip balm to treat cold sores as soon as you feel a cold sore coming on. Mix 1 tablespoon of base oil with a few drops of lemon oil (you can also add to the mixture tea tree oil or lavender essential oil), dip a clean cotton swab in the mixture, and apply directly to the cold sore. Keep the mixture in sealed glass container and repeat several times a day until the sore is gone.

5. Treats Greasy/Oily Hair
Use base oil such as sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, jojoba or olive oil. For one scalp treatment choose up to three essential oils for greasy hair such as lemon, rosemary and eucalyptus and use five drops of each for two tablespoons of base oil. For very long hair you will probably need more oil. Warm the blended oils by placing the container in a bowl of boiling water, and then massage into the scalp. Wrap with a hot towel, leave for at least 15 minutes and then shampoo. Repeat once or twice a week.

6. Household cleaner
I’ve written in the past about the power of Essential Oils to disinfect, sanitize, kill germs, destroy bacteria and eliminate bad odor due to their antiseptic qualities. Add 1/2 (half) a cup of borax to 1 gallon (4 liters) of tepid warm water. Then add 20 drops antibacterial essential oil such as lemon, lavender, tea tree, or rosemary. It can be used in place of your household cleaners and is just as effective as industrial strength brands without the potential harm to your health.

7. Carpet cleaning
You can put a few drops of lemon essential oil on the vacuum cleaner bag or filter for extra cleaning power and for additional great scent.

8. Air freshener
Fill a spray bottle with 8-10 drops each of three different air-freshening essential oils such as lemon, tea tree and eucalyptus and add in 1/2 to 1 cup water. Mist spray around your home whenever you want to freshen the air.

9. Enhances mental clarity and concentration
Diffuse lemon oil to the air: add a few drops to a vaporizer, or just sniff it from the bottle or a cloth. It has the ability to refresh the mind, increase alertness, improve cognitive performance, create a positive mindset and remove negative emotions. Do it while studying or working to improve concentration and mental accuracy.

10. Flavoring
Pure lemon essential oil can be used in small quantity as a substitute for lemon juice in cooking (use food grade only and buy from trusted companies). For example, one drop helps detoxify the body when added to a cup of drinking water (Get more information about detox in my eBook The Detox Guide). For homemade lemonade blend 2 drops of lemon oil, 2 cups of pure water and add honey to taste.

Precautions

Lemon essential oil is photo sensitive so don’t expose the skin to direct sunlight or UV rays. Also this essential oil can cause skin irritation for some people, so it is recommended to dilute this oil. If you are pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician before using this essential oil. Also when you buy this oil, look for therapeutic grade and buy from trusted companies.
