Natural Remedies for Vaginal Dryness

Herbs

Black cohosh

This herb can help with vaginal dryness. It can be taken on its own in a dried form, or as a tincture with water or tea. You can also make a black cohosh tea for hot flashes, find the recipe here.

Chasteberry (Vitex)

This herb helps to normalize sex hormones and can help to eliminate many symptoms of menopause including vaginal dryness. It comes in capsules, teas and liquid extracts at health food stores.

Dong Quai

This herb has a long history of traditional use in the traditional Chinese medicine. This herb helps to minimize menopausal symptoms. In combination with herbs such as black cohosh, chasteberry, and Siberian ginseng, dong quai appears to be useful for controlling hot flashes and reducing vaginal dryness.

Siberian Ginseng

There have been reports showing that ginseng could possibly have many of the same properties as estrogen. Ginseng has been reported to produce an estrogen-like effect on the vaginal mucosa, resulting in the relief of the vaginal dryness which accompanies menopause. It comes as a supplement form, tincture or tea.

Safety note – before taking any of the above herbs, you need to consult with your doctor to make sure these herbs don’t interfere with current medications you take.

Lifestyle Changes that can Improve Vaginal Lubrication

Hormone-balancing diet

Sex hormones need fat. Your first step should be to introduce a diet rich in fatty acids, particularly omega 3. Fish, flaxseed, sesame and sunflower seeds are all good sources.

Eat food that contains isoflavones, which help to regulate estrogen levels. They can be found in flax seeds, legumes, nuts, cherries and apples. You also need to make sure you get enough vitamins A and B, and might need to supplement these. As lubrication is connected with hydration too, make sure you drink enough water. Your vagina will be as grateful for the extra water as your skin is.

Exercise

Adrenal glands and ovaries get stimulated by regular exercise. A cardio-vascular work-out will help with your hormonal balance, increase the flow of blood to the vagina and de-stress you. That’s 3 in 1!

Eliminate cosmetic products that can irritate

It might also be a good idea to limit your use of artificial soaps, bubble baths, vaginal lotions and sprays. They can all add to dryness and make your problems worse. You don’t need to buy artificial soaps and you can make your own natural soap.

As always, the natural approach takes a bit longer and requires some discipline and persistence. Your vaginal health and well-being should be important to you and finding the right solution is very rewarding. So, take the time to find your perfect natural relief and, if possible, avoid the mainstream estrogen therapy that comes with possible side effects.
